Spring Camp

Thirteen KHC members and guests attended the Spring Camp at Clearwater Lake.   Everyone took care of their own camping arrangements, and good sites were found at Falls Creek Campground.   The featured hike was the Chain Meadows Trail, which took much of the day.

Clearwater Lake Hikes 007The hike climbed to the Osprey Falls Viewpoint, then over the top of the plateau and up to the Easter Bluffs, over to the Clearwater Lake Lookout, and down switchbacks through old growth forest to the lake, following the Lake Trail back to the campsite.  Although the whole trail is 17.5 km long, the surface was soft, the grades were forgiving, and the views were varied.

On the second day, we hiked Baileys Chute, then beyond to Marcus Falls, Myanth Falls, and looped back by West Lake.   This was a popular route with lots to see.

Clearwater Lake Hikes 045In the afternoon, some hiked to Sticta Falls and the Dragons Tongue and a few paddled Clearwater Lake.

Clearwater Lake 008Good company, a wonderful area, and pleasant weather all helped to make the 2013 Spring Camp another successful event.

Our Spring Camps

The club is in full-swing with lots of hiking and paddling each week.   Our numbers are up this year and some events are filling up.   Two upcoming camps offer more opportunities to participate in outdoor activities.

Spring Camp

In 2012, we started off hosting a spring camp at Wells Gray Park.   Members camped at the Pyramid Campground and we went on three hikes in the corridor over the long weekend.   The highlight hike was Majerus Falls.   In 2013, we have set our Spring Camp at Clearwater Lake.   Participants will camp at one of two campgrounds at the lake.   Since it is the long weekend, the sites will probably fill up, so we can book a site at Falls Campground, or we can drive up early enough to get one of the first-come, first served sites.   The trails to be hiked this year include Chain Meadows, Sticta Falls, Dragons Tongue, and Baileys Chute/West Lake Loop.   We are also encouraging participants to bring kayaks so that we can paddle on Clearwater Lake.   For more information, see the event listing on the right.

McQueen Camp

This year we have booked the McQueen Lake Environmental Center for the weekend of June 7 – 9th.   KHC is a member of the Federation of Mountain Clubs of B.C. and the AGM will be hosted at the site on Saturday.   Club members, guests, and visitors will enjoy the camp facilities for two nights.   Club members are organizing the meals, hikes, and social activities.   This is an unique opportunity for like-minded people to share a special facility and enjoy outdoors activities.   More information can be found in the event listings on the right.

Some short news items:

  • The next recreational paddling session will be at Paul Lake on Monday.  Participants in scheduled paddling outings are encouraged to check the website on the day of the event if conditions are marginal
  • Hike leaders request that participants register through the website booking system and not through comments.   It is important for participants to read the hike/outing description before the hike and it also allows the hike leader to contact McQueen creek plus 003participants through email, if needed.   If the participant is registering a guest, he/she can book two spaces.
  • Club Directors have adapted a policy on dogs.   Although we are a dog-friendly club, not all participants (and other hikers) are comfortable with a large group of dogs.   Our new policy is a maximum of 4 dogs, at one per owner and a leash is required, although many trails will allow off-leash opportunities.   Hike leaders are asked to specify if any issues are known.   Participants are asked to post a comment if they are bringing a dog.
  • Hike leaders are asked to be very clear if hikes or outings will be difficult.   If the listing is not clear, contact the hike leader.
