Description

A follow on backpack, or a separate booking, into a scenic glacier-swept section of Garibaldi Prov Park in the Coast Mountains.   This area can be very busy and crowded on a we will go in on a weekday and try to avoid the crowds.

Drive from Kamloops on the 18th July (if you are not already on the Wedgemount Lake backpack) and camp at Squamish.   (I will camp two nights(17 and 18th)  at a Squamish area campground to shower, laundry, rest up etc. in between trips.)   At a later date I will select a campground for these nights and you can make your own bookings, although more than likely my site will accommodate more people and tents.

Day 1 – hike into Elfin Lake campground – 11 km, about 3 hours.   The campground and lakes are on a small plateau and swimming is allowed in the first, larger lake.   The second is used for drinking water – but it must be purified.   There is also a cabin here and this section of the trip will be busy.   Many hikers from the area will use this area as day hiking, and there are also mtn bikers coming in.

Day 2 and 3 – depending on weather conditions.   We will get away from the crowds once we leave Elfin Lakes so one day we will hike to Mamquam Lakes a day trip of 22 Km  through flat, open barrens scratched clean by glaciers.   Snow may linger here into mid- August.   Then we travel over a major moraine with awesome views of Mt Garibaldi, Pyramid and Mamquam Mountains and the Garibaldi Neve.

The other day we will hike around Ring Creek canyon, Opal Cone, the Gargoyles and Little Diamond Head routes.   A decision will be made according to weather conditions as to whether to do the longer or shorter day.

Day 4 – Hike out and drive home.

This is a new area to the co-ordinator so expect some exploratory routes!!

Please email me at chillipowell2@gmail.com to be considered for this trip.   It will be restricted to 8 participants as the area is crowded and we may not be able to get many campsites.   The co-ordinator reserves the right to choose participants based on their experience, fitness level and suitability.
