Description

This is a long challenging day hike climbing some 848 m over some 6.5 km(13 km return).   We drive past Clinton to the Marble Range and a short way on a good gravel road.  If we have enough high clearance vehicles we can drive right to trailhead but if not we will park on the road and walk the short distance to trailhead.

The track follows the creek up the valley and is in excellent shape and gradually climbing.   At 4.5 km a junction is reached with a small campsite.   To the east is Wild Horse Mountain, but we will bear left up another creek valley to a narrower track alongside the creek through the forest, then wet meadows.   At this time of year we should see many alpine flowers (and of course the bugs that go with them).   The trail climbs to the top of the pass into a dry meadow on a ridge bearing west to the peak.  The route is clearly seen at this point, a scree route up the rocky slopes – near the top there are no trees and hikers can just follow the easiest route to the top of the ridge.   The summit is a short way to the north.  Wonderful views in all 4 directions.   We will return the same way.

Do not register for this hike if you need to be somewhere in the early evening;  we may not be back into town until late afternoon.
