Description

An entirely off-trail hike above and below the basalt columns in the Dewdrop Range

  • meet at Brock Dog Park to carpool at 10:00
  • park on the Frederick Road and start the trek up to the ridge overlooking the lake
  • scramble down to the bottom of the upper line of basalt columns on the east end and then follow the base of the cliffs to the west
  • traverse under another set of columns along ridges to the top of the lowest line of columns at the west end
  • loop back through the hills to the top of the ridge and viewpoints before descending to the vehicles
  • anyone who registers needs to be okay with off-trail hiking on rough terrain
  • good boots and poles recommended
  • very scenic and geologically interesting
  • agates and fossils may be found along the route
  • lunch along the route
  • “good clean fun” as long as you have a sense of humour

Outing Notes:

  • the route will have cactus so it may not be appropriate for some dogs
  • ticks will be out
  • with the rough footing on broken terrain, strong ankles and good boots are needed
