Description

Yak Peak is the highest of the summits on Zopkios Ridge and has a climbers’ trail which has recently been improved.   It is an extremely steep, challenging climb up to a fabulous viewpoint.   It is an extremely steep challenging downhill to get back to the car and will not be fast.

**  Good endurance on uphill climbs is necessary, with a steady pace.  Some scrambling involved.

We will allow 6-7 hours on the trail, it has an elevation gain of 840 metres at an average grade of 28%.   There may be the odd patch of snow to go through so sturdy boots and poles are mandatory.

We may split into two groups, one at a more leisurely pace, with another leader in that group and if weather or time becomes an issue the slower group may have to turn around before the summit.   We will meet at Aberdeen Mall meet-up spot to leave at 0700 to beat the heat climbing up.   Estimated gas cost $15/$20 depending on numbers in the vehicle if you choose to car pool.   High wheel base not necessary.
