CWF/KHC Hike for Wildlife event a success

On Saturday, April 16, the KHC held its 5th annual Hike for Wildlife event, a twist on the ‘Walk for Wildlife’ national campaign promoted by the Canadian Wildlife Federation to encourage Canadians to get outside and enjoy the great outdoors.

This year we had 17 members and 2 guests in attendance for the event. All the guest fees and donations collected that day went to the CWF. In total, we raised $158!

The highlight of this year’s hike was the instalment of 5 Western Bluebird houses along the fence line that surrounds Long Lake in the Lac du Bois Grasslands. Our feathered friends would like to thank KHC members Matt Treger, Joanna Battjes , and Michelle Dressler for assisting in the creation of their new homes, as well as artists Emily R, Claire N, Molly S, Ella S and Chris S for their decorative painting.

The new homes will be monitored periodically by our club and hopefully bluebirds will take residence in them this year. For more information about the Kamloops Bluebird program you can contact Susan at

Raised in Saskatchewan, I came to Kamloops in 2006. I have been avidly involved with the KHC since 2011, serving in various board member positions and as a current hike Leader. During that time I have seen this club grow from 50 to 200 plus members, which has been astonishing!

Known as a ‘seasonal hiker’, I hibernate for the winter. So in Spring, I look forward to exploring many more trails and wish sharing it with others who are like minded in our club. See you on the trails!
