Description

It looks like Sunday will be a sunny day which is perfect for reaching this peak.  Clearwater Peak (many mistake it for Grizzly Peak which is behind it) is to the north of Clearwater.  On a clear day there are views of the Trophies, Raft Mountain Dunn Peak as well as the mountains and lakes around Grizzly Lake.  You will look right down onto the frozen Dutch Lake in Clearwater.

This is an easy hike in the summer along a maintained ATV road.  During the winter the logging road that takes you to the trailhead is not plowed.  We will then have to break trail up the logging road (5 km and 515m elevation gain).  Once at the trailhead, the trail passes past on old cut block, through some meadows and eventually winds its way up to the ridge (3 km and 260m elevation gain).  Expect to break trail through deep snow.

We won’t be trying to set speed records.  A moderate pace with lots of quick breaks will get us up there.

During a partly cloudy day, the clouds seem to stick to Clearwater Peak.  When the clouds are on it conditions are horrible – cold, windy and zero visibility.  We will therefore only do this hike if the conditions are perfect.  If conditions aren’t perfect we will do something in the Clearwater area lower down (with a later start time).  The leader will confirm the event the night before – so look for comments.

<—- Ridge to the summit in the clouds (Cold!!!!)

If conditions aren’t perfect, the hike to this peak will be postponed until the next available day.
