Description

The falls in Wells Gray Prov. Park typically freeze every winter.  Spahats, Moul and Helmcken Falls form ice cones at the plunge pools which vary in height depending on how cold the winter has been.  We will visit the ice cone at Moul Falls and the partially frozen falls at Dawson Falls.

  • Meet at Paul Lake to arrange carpooling (8:30)
  • Meet the leader at the Wells Gray Info Center (10:00)

  • Drive to the Moul Falls Parking Lot – park on the road
  • Hike or Snowshoe into the falls (an easy 3 km hike in)
  • The trail to the falls tends to be well packed down, so snowshoes may not be necessary
  • There is a long set of stairs to go down which will be very slippery
  • The hike in and out will take less than 3 hours

  • Drive from Moul Falls to the Pyramid Campsite Road
  • This road is not plowed in the winter so we will snowshoe the 2 km to the trailhead
  • Snowshoe the 1 km trail to the falls
  • Descend a steep trail to the plunge pool (the leader will bring a rope to help with the slippery descent)
  • Walk to the base of the frozen falls

Doing both falls in one day makes for a longer day.  If you are carpooling you may wish to find oput who is doing both falls.  Some may decide that one hike is enough for the day.

This event will be enabled during the first week of January.
