Description

The hike starts off heading through very wet meadows.  When I do this hike I were gum boots through the meadows and then change into hiking boots once in the forest.  This is advised.

Once through the forest, we cross a boulder field and then up a steep slope to Crystal Pass.  We will take our time through the boulder field, but this will be one of the many challenges to this hike.

Once at Crystal Pass, we turn and head up a very steep scree slope to the tarns below Raft 2.  Typically, we try to stay in a creek bed on the way up.  This again is a challenge.

Once up at the final tarn, we will hike up the ridge to the col between Raft 2 and 3 (this is usually the easy part of the hike).  Once at the col, we will ascend either Raft 2 or 3.  While up there we will look for possible routes down from Raft 3 to Moilliet Ridge.

Participants are to meet in Kamloops at 8:00 and make their way up to Clearwater.  The leader will meet the group at the Wells Gay Info Center at 9:30.  From there we will continue on to the trailhead on the Spahats Valley FSR.  We should be on the trail by 10:00.  Expect to be on the trail a minimum of 7 hours.  We will have to keep a steady (but careful) pace if we plan to be out before dark.  Bring a headlamp just in case.

This will be a long hike.  Unless you have been on a number of harder hikes this year – this wont be the hike for you.  Even if it is warm and sunny down in Clearwater, expect the north side of Raft to be cooler and windy – so dress appropriately.
