Description

It’s rare that winter conditions are as favourable as they are right now in regards to snowshoeing along the trails of the always beautiful Roderick Haig-Brown Provincial Park.  Which is why we’re jumping on this before the warmer, more seasonable late-winter weather arrives!

So…please consider joining leaders Ed and Lois Hunter for an easy to moderate 10 km. (approx) snowshoe beginning near the spawning channels of the Adam’s River right up to the spectacular narrow gorge and back.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Roderick Haig-Brown Park (home to one of the largest sockeye salmon runs in North America), it is a hidden jewel boasting a beautiful mixed forest with well-marked trails that offer glimpses of Big Shuswap Lake and oftentimes parallel the year-round abundant crystal clear waters of the Adams River.

The terrain and grade itself are easy to moderate, but if we’re having to break trail for any distance, it could be a bit of a workout.  That said, it’s advisable to bring gaiters and to wear layers that can easily be shed or added as the weather conditions and workout dictate.

We will meet as a group at the Squilax Gas station (located on the Squilax-Anglemont Rd. and also known as Race-Trac gas) at 10:30.  From Kamloops, expect it to take you about an hour to drive to Squilax.  Leaders Ed and Lois will greet you at this gas station and then together we’ll drive the short distance (about 10 km.) to the trail head.  There is one outhouse at the park, but no guarantees as to whether or not it’s open, so…you may want to take a potty-break at the gas station:-)

Ed and Lois invite you to their place afterwards (a short 2-3 minute drive from the trailhead) for a brief social and offerings of hot beverages (coffee, tea, hot chocolate, chai) and some nibblies:-)
