Description

A hike to the base of the volcanic plug, then a steep scramble to the top for lunch

  • article – Skoatl
  • meet at Paul Lake meet-up spot at 9:00
  • drive to Skoatl trailhead (1.5 hrs)
  • high-clearance vehicles needed for carpooling
  • hike to the base of Skoatl, then scramble to the peak
  • the final scramble is up vertical rock ledges for 15 minutes; not a good one for those with a fear of heights
  • lunch on top, with a fine view of the Bonaparte Plateau
  • return by the same route
  • a moderate route, but the steep scramble is not for everyone
  • spaces allowed are 8 for 2 vehicles, but if a 3rd high clearance vehicle can be found, more spaces can be opened.
  • check the event listing in the last 48 hours for updates
  • if it has rained a lot, we will cancel or go to a Plan B hike (Deep Lake Loop) if the weather is marginal
