Description

May is the best time to be in Wells Gray.  No bugs, no crowds and the rivers are at their highest levels.

The plan is to camp at the Clearwater Campsite Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  The campsite typically does not fill up during this long weekend, so an early registration should not be required.  All participates will be required to book the campsites themselves – as the date gets closer we can coordinate sharing of campsites and car pooling.

The event will be weather dependent – camping in the rain is no fun.  The leader will monitor the weather as the event draws near.

We will set up camp Friday night and share a fire.  The meet up spot is Site 66 in the Falls Campground

Saturday we will meet at Site 66 at 9:45 and leave at 10:00 sharp.  The hike to the Easter Bluffs Loop  starts at the campsite.  This is a park trail which includes 2 nice lookouts, a waterfall, a trip through a lava flow, and the Easter Bluffs.  This is a long but moderate trail with a distance of 16 km and an elevation gain of 270m.

Sunday we will meet at Site 66 at 9:45 and leave at 10:00 sharp.  We will visit a number of the falls in the park.  From the campsite, we will drive to Bailey’s Chute and do an easy route that includes Bailey’s Chute, Marcus Falls, Myanth Falls and West Lake.  This is an easy 6 km loop.  From there we will travel to the north side of Dawson Falls.  This is an easy 2.5 km loop which offers view of the falls the tourists never see.  From there, if the group is still enthusiastic, we will drive down to Moul Falls.  This is an easy hike to the falls and then a set of stairs down to the falls.  It is a 6 km return tip, but well worth it.  We can walk behind these falls – although rain gear is advised – you will get wet.

Monday we pack up camp and head home.  On the way home we will stop at the Wells Gray Info Center at 10:00.  From there we will shuttle a few cars down to the Dutch Lake Treailhead and then proceed to the Triple Falls Trailhead.  The Triple Decker Falls hike is 8 km all downhill.  We will pass 2 falls and walk along the bottom of basalt cliffs that will tower overhead.

I have limited the participate space to 12 as this is the number I am comfortable leading.  If leaders join the group and are willing to lead a separate group, I will increase the participant number.

This is a simple “car camping trip” so I will assume all participates will have a tent/trailer or other form of shelter.
