Shoulder Season Hiking
With colder weather and some snow on the ground, hiking the trails becomes more challenging. Many hikers continue to get our regularly with a few adaptations. Dressing in layers helps us to deal with cold air and with moisture buildup. Inner layers should wick away the moisture to prevent the skin from getting cold and damp. There are many excellent base layer products on the market. Nothing seems to work like merino wool for hiking and snowshoeing socks for the feet. Boots can be waterproofed, keeping the feet drier. Traction devices can be carried to get through icy areas. Most of these are light enough to carry in your pocket for a quick install when needed. The best product our there is a pair of microspikes, available from our local retailers or online from MEC. Poles help us with stability in the snow, but remember to make them a bit longer for winter hiking and snowshoeing. Carry something to sit on for a lunch break to keep yourself dry. Gaiters are the best way to keep your feet dry. In the end, if we can keep our heads, hands, and feet dry, we can be comfortable. Check the list of Recommended Esssentials for winter hiking and snowshoeing.
