Location Information:
Deep in the Monte Hills along backroads – a remote spot
Although the caves and fissures are interesting, some cautions are provided here:
- go with someone who knows the route and the cave entrances
- wear a helmet – its easy to bang your head in the dark caves
- ice stays in the lowest chambers so proper footwear is required
- there are some deep holes so caution must be taken at the rim and down in the caves
- headlamps are required
- we usually bring a rope to help with the steep entrances
- there is no guarantee the remote backroads will be clear so bring a chainsaw and a shovel, just in case
- there is considerable deadfall to go around or over
- article – Bearcat Caves
- we may have GPS tracks available for an experienced hike leader, including the road route in, but we do not share these easily since there is some risk in going into the caves
- high clearance is okay but if conditions are wet, a 4×4 is better
